You've spent hundreds of euros building your 1:18 diecast collection. Now the question is: how do you display it properly, keep it in mint condition, and protect your investment? This guide covers display cases, dusting techniques, lighting options, and storage best practices.
Why Proper Display Matters
Diecast and resin models are surprisingly delicate. Direct sunlight causes paint to fade within months. Dust scratches delicate clear-coats. Humidity causes metal parts to corrode. A well-organised, protected display setup preserves both the appearance and value of your models.
Choosing the Right Display Case
Glass display cabinets are the gold standard for serious collectors. IKEA's DETOLF cabinet is extremely popular in the diecast community — affordable, glass on all sides, and compatible with LED strip lighting. UV-protective glass is essential if your room receives natural light, as it blocks the UV rays that fade paint.
Individual acrylic display cases work excellently for single models on a desk or shelf. For 1:18 scale, you need a case approximately 30cm wide x 15cm deep x 12cm tall.
Lighting Your Display
LED strip lights inside glass cabinets bring out metallic paint finishes beautifully. Warm white LEDs (3000K) suit red and orange models best; cool white (6000K) works better for silver and blue cars. Always use LED — halogen bulbs generate heat that can damage models over time.
Organising Your Collection
Consider organising by brand, era, or colour for maximum visual impact. Small acrylic risers to create height variation add depth and allow more models to be seen simultaneously.
Cleaning Your Models
Use a soft artist's paintbrush to gently brush dust off, working from roof to floor. For stubborn dust in grilles and wheel spokes, use compressed air at 30cm distance. For fingerprints, use a microfibre cloth dampened with distilled water — never tap water (leaves mineral marks) or glass cleaners with ammonia.
Protecting Against Paint Fade
Position your display away from windows and direct sunlight. Use UV-blocking window film or UV-protective glass. Keep room temperature consistent at 18–22 degrees Celsius.
Storing for Investment
Keep every model in its original box with all packaging. Models in original packaging command significantly higher prices on the secondary market. Store boxes upright in a cool, dry location — never stacked.
